Thanks to Thursday’s 18-4 demolition of Bryant, the top-seeded Mountaineers will meet No. 2 seed Wagner in Saturday’s Northeast Conference tournament final for the automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
The big-game atmosphere was back at Xfinity Center for Wednesday’s game against Butler. A “blackout” was in effect. The arena was nearly packed to capacity for a midweek 8:30 p.m. tipoff. Even Scott Van Pelt was in his courtside seat.
So how does a Maryland basketball program that seemed to be trending downward as recently as 2013-14 ¿ or have you all forgotten the 17-15 season that ended without any sort of post-season invitation ¿ get included by the Sporting News in its ranking of the top 15 programs since 2000-01? It has mostly to do with the weighted points system used to determine a program¿s accomplishments.
Chances are your brackets are sufficiently busted after VCU knocked off Kansas on Sunday to set up a very unlikely Final Four. But with little bracket bias left, we can sit back and enjoy what should be an intriguing four-team tournament this weekend.
