In 2010, a blowout on an offshore drilling rig working off the coast of Louisiana caused one of the worst environmental disasters in modern history. Eleven platform workers were killed in the initial explosion, and 5 million barrels of oil flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, the worst petroleum spill ever in U.S. waters.
