The Orioles roughed up right-hander A.J. Burnett ¿ one of the team¿s top offseason free-agent targets ¿ for six runs on seven hits over three innings on their way to a 14-3 Grapefruit League win over the Philadelphia Phillies.
A few recognizable names have been designated for assignment in the past few days, including outfielder Bobby Abreu and first baseman Lyle Overbay. But the one that can most easily be connected to the Orioles is right-hander Derek Lowe, whom the Cleveland Indians designated Wednesday after he allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.
Matthew Byar, a 43-year old Towson resident, made the trip to Oriole Park at Camden Yards to compete against the likes of Lutherville's Chris Ely, a well-known Baltimore broadcaster who worked at WJZ-TV and WBAL-TV, and Chris Panzarella, a Cockeysville resident and graduate student at Loyola University, for the honor of being the Orioles' new voice.
