For decades, Frederick residents had talked about the possible health effects of the experiments that the military was conducting at Fort Detrick. But it took a grieving father with scientists, lawyers and money to drag questions about contamination and cancer out into the open.

To those of us who have lived in close proximity to Aberdeen Proving Ground for any length of time, that such deadly things are present so nearby is hardly shocking. Perhaps that's why only a handful of people turned out this week for a hearing on the military's plans for disposing of such chemicals.

Dr. Ross J. Brechner, an ophthalmologist who gave up a private practice in order to work in public health and travel across the world on numerous medical missions, died Aug. 4 from heart disease at his Catonsville home. He was 71.
