Local students wins Science Olympiad design contest

Piper Stankiewicz, an eighth-grade student at Mount Airy Middle School, won the Maryland Science Olympiad design contest. Her original design, which incorporates the Maryland flag, a crab, and science icons, will appear on all the Maryland Science Olympiad T-shirts. Students from more than 50 schools in the state participated in the contest. Science Olympiad is dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing interest in science, creating a technologically-literate workforce, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. Teams of students participate in Science Olympiad tournaments and non-competitive events across a wide range of STEM fields and topics. In addition, Science Olympiad is incorporated into classroom curriculum and training institutes are provided for teachers.
