Maryland women's basketball forward Kaila Charles named National Player of the Week

Maryland women’s basketball sophomore wing Kaila Charles was named the Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Tuesday.

Charles averaged 24.5 points, four rebounds and two steals in a pair of wins last week for the No. 11 Terps (18-3, 7-1 Big Ten). The Glenn Dale native finished with a career-high 32 points on 12-for-16 shooting along with seven rebounds, three blocks and an assist in a 99-69 home rout of then-No. 12 Ohio State on Jan. 22. At Northwestern on Thursday, she had a team-high 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting in a 68-65 victory.

Charles, who also earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors, leads Maryland in scoring (17.8 points per game), rebounding (7.9 per game) and steals (1.9 per game) this season. She has scored in double figures in 19 of 21 games.

The Terps next play Rutgers (17-6, 5-4) on Thursday in College Park.
