College ice cream shop Maryland Dairy changes name of Durkin-inspired flavor

While it’s still uncertain whether Maryland football coach DJ Durkin will return from administrative leave following the death of Jordan McNair, one of the school’s establishments is already moving forward as if he won't.

Maryland Dairy, the school’s ice cream shop that offers Terps-themed desserts, has rebranded its flavor “Terpin’ Durkin Crunch” to “Pretzel Logic,” according to Andy Kostka of the school’s newspaper The Diamondback.

The ice cream is described as a “rich Tahitian vanilla bean cream, shaved bittersweet chocolate, dark chocolate-covered pretzels and a smooth caramel swirl.”

Maryland Dairy has also promoted the flavor in the past on social media, but has since deleted those posts.

Maryland Dairy has removed the school’s football coach from its products in the past. After Maryland fired its head coach Randy Edsall after a 2-4 start to the 2015 season, the ice cream shop rechristened their vanilla-and-Heath-Bar flavor from “Rockin’ Randy” to “ODK Krunch,” the Diamondback reported.

Assistant director of Maryland’s Dining Services Bart Hipple released a statement Tuesday afternoon on the matter: “As the Coach is on leave, we decided it was appropriate to use a different name in selling this ice cream at the Dairy.”

Maryland Dairy could not immediately be reached by The Baltimore Sun for comment.
