Report: Former Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson in running for same position at Fresno State

Former Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson is reportedly one of five finalists for the athletic director position at Fresno State, according to The Fresno Bee.

The newspaper cited multiple sources who confirmed that Anderson – who is currently the interim athletic director at Cal State Northridge – is scheduled to interview with the university this week. The Bee obtained the names of four of the finalists, the other three being UC Irvine athletic director Michael Izzi, Incarnate Word athletic director Brian Wickstrom and Fresno State interim athletic director Steve Robertello, who replaced Jim Bartko after he resigned in November 2017.

Anderson resigned as the Terps athletic director on April 13, three days before his six-month leave of absence was scheduled to end. Anderson inherited a financially struggling department from Debbie Yow in 2010 and was forced to cut seven sports in 2012 before helping guide the university from 61 years in the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Big Ten.

Other decisions made by Anderson included firing football coach Ralph Friedgen and replacing him with Connecticut coach Randy Edsall before firing the latter during the 2015 season and hiring Michigan defensive coordinator DJ Durkin. Anderson also replaced Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Gary Williams – who retired in May 2011 – with Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon, whose team failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament in March.

Fresno State president Joseph Castro has said the target date to hire a new athletic director is the end of June, according to the report.
