Suspended safety Markquese Bell announces he will be leaving Maryland

Freshman safety Markquese Bell, who was suspended indefinitely a few days before Maryland opened the 2017 season, announced on Instagram Tuesday that he is withdrawing from the university.

The reason for Bell’s suspension was never announced. Fellow freshman Alex Woods, who was suspended along with Bell in late August, announced last month that he was leaving Maryland.

Bell, a four-star prospect, was the third-highest rated recruit in this year’s freshman class. Maryland coach DJ Durkin said last February on signing day that the 6-3, 194-pound Bell “looked like an NFL safety.”

Both Bell and Woods were expected to play as freshmen.

Durkin is expected to address Bell’s decision at his regular Tuesday news conference.
