InsideMDSports: Gonzaga quarterback Nick Johns gets Terps offer, will visit soon

Maryland’s search for a quarterback in the class of 2015 continued Wednesday night when the Terps extended an offer to Gonzaga (D.C.) signal caller Nick Johns.

Johns also holds an offer from Virginia.

“My coach told me to call coach [Randy] Edsall and that he had some good news,” recalled the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Johns. “When I did, he offered right there. … I talked to him earlier and he said he wanted to talk to me [that] night, so I sort of knew it was coming.”

According to Johns, the offer had been in the works long before Wednesday.

“Coach Edsall, they’ve been looking at me for a while,” he said. “They wanted to offer me, and once I got my grades up, he was ready to go. I got a 3.0 [GPA], and he was impressed with that.”

With an offer in hand, Johns now plans to visit College Park for a junior day next weekend, and he’ll follow that with a trip to Virginia. Those two programs have separated themselves from the pack, at least for now.

“UVA and Maryland are standing out,” Johns said. “But whoever comes in with an offer, I’ll check out. I’m going to consider everyone.”

As for what will push one team to the forefront in his recruitment, Johns says there are two things he is looking for from a future home.

“I think the combination of coaching stability and early playing time” are important, he said. “I don’t want to sit around for a couple of years and wait to play.”

Johns received a three-star, 0.8637-rating in the 247Sports Composite as the nation’s 24th-ranked pro-style quarterback.
