Meet Terps safety commit Josh Woods

With national signing day only days away, preview the Terps' class of 2014 with a handy, commit-by-commit guide. Prospect profiles will run all the way through Wednesday (Feb. 5), when players can officially sign a national letter of intent. (SEE THEM ALL HERE.)

Name: Josh Woods (AKA @_numero1_)

Position: Safety

Measurables: 6 feet 3, 180 pounds

High school: McDonogh

Recruiter: Keith Dudzinski

Finalists: Boston College, Delaware, Villanova

Rankings: 247: 3*, No. 91 S

Rivals: 3*

ESPN: 3*, No. 79 S

Stats/honors: 35 tackles and four interceptions (defense), 35 catches for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns (offense); All-Metro first-team member, All-State, Big 33 Football Classic invitee

Quoted for emphasis: "I think once Maryland saw his last four of five games as a senior, they saw his ability."

Breakdown: If, somewhere, there is actual recorded footage of Woods from his junior season – a stray highlight here, an interview there – it is not so easily found on the Interent. Punch "Josh Woods highlights" into YouTube, and you get mainly highlights from this season and a reel of plays featuring another Josh Woods from last season. This may help explain why, through November, a player who in a matter of weeks would be named consensus Consensus-All State was still unknown to many Maryland fans. Junior-year production matters to college recruiters, in the same way junior-year schoolwork matters to college admissions officers. If you don't make the grade, there's not much more you can do but look to your next chance and hope someone likes you enough. Woods did. When Terps assistant coach Keith Dudzinski stopped by an Eagles game this fall, he saw the rangy defensive back. Woods' low profile, Dudzinski soon learned, did not match his high output. So the Terps offered, Woods committed, and the program, out of seemingly nowhere, had gotten a player who seems headed somewhere good.
