Demetri McGill won't sign with Maryland next month after the Terps pulled his scholarship last weekend.
A three-star defensive tackle prospect from Ocean Lakes High in Virginia Beach, McGill committed to the Terps in November but was told Sunday that his offer was no longer on the table.
"They said I had a previous knee injury, so that was their excuse to pull my scholarship," said McGill, who tore his posterior cruciate ligament during his sophomore year. "I had an MRI done. [Maryland] called me about it [and] told me their team doctors said I needed total reconstruction of my PCL, but my doctor said I didn't need it. He doesn't recommend that I need to have surgery."
NCAA rules bar Maryland coaches from commenting on unsigned prospects.
McGill said he has a 2.5 GPA and is academically qualified for Division I competition. A source close to the situation, however, said McGill most likely would not have been admitted to Maryland. The university admits just a handful of athletes each year that meet minimum NCAA standards but are still deemed academically "at risk." According to the source, McGill's initial offer was contingent on him being able to meet the school's admissions standards.
McGill said he has offers from East Carolina, North Carolina, Old Dominion and Temple. He wants to visit ECU soon and hopes to set up an official to UNC on the 25th
"Everything should fall into place there," he said. "I've just accepted [Maryland's decision]. I'll find somewhere else to go."
