Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams said Friday night that he is still interviewing candidates for the assistant coaching job left vacant when Chuck Driesell left last month to become head coach at The Citadel.

"I have several people I have to talk to. The search is on," Williams said in a telephone interview.

Maryland has not divulged the candidates' names.

There were online reports Friday night that Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos has been hired — or is about to be — to fill the post. Williams said that was inaccurate.

Patsos was a Maryland assistant for 13 seasons, including when the Terps claimed the national championship in 2002. The Terrapins made 11 consecutive NCAA tournaments while Patsos was there.

Patsos took over Loyola's program in 2004. The school recently hired a new athletic director, Jim Paquette, previously an associate at Boston College. Loyola's previous athletic director, Joe Boylan, had been on the job since 1991.

Patsos did not immediately return telephone calls left Friday night at his Loyola office.

Maryland currently has two assistants — Robert Ehsan and Keith Booth.

Driesell, the son of former Maryland coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell, had been at the school for four years.
