Spanish team says Juan Dixon tested positive for steroid

Baltimore Sun

Juan Dixon, Maryland's all-time leading scorer, has tested positive for the steroid nandrolone, his Spanish team Unicaja announced.

The Baltimore native took the drug test in Greece in November, before he joined the Malaga-based team, Unicaja said on its Web site.

Dixon, who went to Calvert Hall, was informed of the positive result several days ago, and the International Basketball Federation decided to suspend him on Friday.

His suspension is indefinite until further notice.

Efforts to reach Dixon through his aunt, former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, were not immediately successful. A message left at Blue Entertainment Sports Television, with whom Dixon was once associated, was not returned.

Maryland coach Gary Williams declined comment about Dixon after his team's 77-56 loss at Duke on Saturday.

Dixon starred on the Williams-coached Maryland team that won the NCAA championship in 2002.

Dixon, whose parents died of AIDS before he finished high school, tops Maryland's career scoring list with 2,269 points. He is also first in 3-pointers made and is second in career steals behind Johnny Rhodes.

Dixon later played for the Washington Wizards, Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons in the NBA.
