Maryland basketball receives votes in preseason AP poll, but falls short of Top 25

The Maryland men's basketball team will start the year where it finished last season: out of the Associated Press Top 25.

The Terps received seven votes in the preseason poll, released Wednesday, tied for 36th overall with Oklahoma and Nevada. Maryland received votes in all but the final AP poll last season, cracking the Top 25 for eight weeks and rising as high as No. 17.

Duke is the preseason No. 1, followed by Big Ten preseason favorite Michigan State and Arizona. Minnesota is ranked No. 15, Northwestern No. 19 and Purdue No. 20. Wisconsin received 14 votes in the poll, ahead of the Terps, and Michigan got six.

Maryland won't play a preseason Top 25 team until Dec. 1, when it hosts the Boilermakers. Butler and Texas Christian, perhaps the Terps' two toughest nonconference opponents, received votes in the poll.
