Senior Suli Dainkeh's goal with 1:01 remaining in the second overtime lifted the No. 1 Maryland men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Michigan, completing the program's first undefeated regular season since the Terps shared the national championship with Michigan State in 1968.
It was the first career goal for Dainkeh as the Terps (15-0-2, 7-0-1 Big Ten Conference) stretched their winning streak to 12games. Maryland has not lost since Oct. 31, 2015, against Ohio State. It is the sixth undefeated regular season in program history.
Gordon Wild, who leads the conference with 15 goals, and senior defender Chris Odoi-Atsem scored for Maryland, which will host the winner between No. 8 seed Michigan and No. 9 seed Rutgers in the Big Ten Conference tournament quarterfinals Sunday at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. The semifinals and championship matches are scheduled for Friday and Sunday in Westfield, Ind.
The Terps needed to overcome an early deficit after surrendering goals in the seventh and 19th minutes. Wild scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute and Odoi-Atsem scored with a minute left in regulation to tie the game. Dainkeh won the game with a goal from 6 yards to the far post.
Maryland, which played without key players Sebastian Elney, Eryk Williamson, DJ Reeves and Amar Sejdic, outshot the Wolverines 27-9.
"I am bursting with pride from the way our guys competed today," coach Sasho Cirovski said. "This is a historic moment for our program.
More men's soccer: Freshman Josh Fawole scored in the 16th minute and a senior Matt Sanchez made four saves to lead host Loyola Maryland (7-6-3, 5-1-2) to a 1-0 win over Colgate (10-5-1, 4-2-1) to secure a first-round bye in the Patriot League tournament. … Nathan Bilbie scored in the 88th minute to lift No. 6 seed York (Pa.) to a 1-0 win over host No. 3 seed St. Mary's in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament Saturday.
Women's soccer: Mount St. Mary's (5-12-1, 1-7 Northeast Conference) finished its regular season with a 2-1 win over visiting Fairleigh Dickinson (7-11-1, 5-2-1) to end a six-game losing streak. Sophomore Gianna Pomykacz scored for the Mountaineers. … Senior Gillian Sawyer (Wilde Lake) scored two goals to lift No. 3 seed St. Mary's to a 2-1 win over No. 6 seed Salisbury in the first round of the CAC tournament Saturday. The Seahawks will play at No. 2 seed Frostburg State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Wrestling: Maryland's Black team won the final four matches for a 17-14 win over the Red team. Sophomore David-Brian Whisler (Black) capped off the scrimmage with a 6-4 sudden victory win over redshirt sophomore Garrett Wesneski (Red) in the 197-pound bout. The Black team secured wins in the three previous matches, starting with a 2-1 decision for redshirt sophomore Patrick Gerish (Black) over redshirt freshman Garrett Griffith (Red) in the 165-pound match.
Football: Johns Hopkins senior quarterback Jonathan Germano was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
