Sophomore right-hander Brian Shaffer pitched eight innings and sophomore Kevin Biondic had three hits and two RBIs to lift Maryland to a 6-4 victory over host Michigan State (34-18, 14-11 Big Ten Conference) on Saturday to qualify for the Big Ten baseball tournament, which begins Wednesday in Omaha, Neb.
Freshman Nick Dunn had four hits, including two doubles, and sophomore Ryan Selmer earned his fourth save of the season for the Terps (28-25, 13-11), who will be the No. 6 seed and face No. 3 seed Indiana (31-22, 15-9) on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
"Brian was really the story of the game," Maryland coach John Szefc said. "He was able to stay in the game after the first and for what he went through, that was a great start. We came back and put up six and had some great at bats."
More college baseball: Game 1 of the Patriot League finals between Navy and Holy Cross scheduled for Saturday in Annapolis was postponed because of poor field conditions. The teams will play a doubleheader today at noon. Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m.

—No.1 seed Mercer County CC (48-8) defeated No. 4 seed CCBC-Essex (28-24), 7-1 and 25-8, to win the National Junior College Athletic Association Northeast District Tournament championship series, 2-0. Mercer County heads to Enid, Okla., next weekend for the Division II World Series.
Men's soccer: Defender Kyle Beckerman (Arundel), a Crofton native, midfielder Graham Zusi (Maryland), D.C. United defender Steve Birnbaum and former D.C. midfielder Perry Kitchen were named to the U.S. national team's 23-player roster that will play in the Copa America Centenario in June, coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced. The team will compete in Group A against fourth-ranked Colombia in Santa Clara, Calif., on June 3, Costa Rica in Chicago on June 7 and Paraguay in Philadelphia on June 11. The Americans will play warm-up games against Puerto Rico in Bayamon today; Ecuador in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday; and Bolivia in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday.

WNBA: Tayler Hill had a career-high 24 points and seven assists to help the Washington Mystics (1-3) outlast the Connecticut Sun (1-2), 84-76, in overtime. Hill hit 10 of 11 free throws, including 6-for-6 in overtime. Bria Hartley added 16 points and Emma Meesseman scored 14 for the Mystics (1-3). Stephanie Dolson made one of two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to force overtime for the Mystics.
National Women's Soccer League: Lindsey Horan scored her third goal of the season to lift the host Portland Thorns (3-0-3) to a 4-1 victory over the league-leading Washington Spirit (4-1-1). Joanna Lohman scored on a header in the 55th minute for Washington.
