Wisconsin wins Big Ten men's basketball title outright

Maryland's long-shot bid to tie for the Big Ten regular-season men's basketball championship and clinch the top seed in next week's conference tournament ended Thursday night when No. 6 Wisconsin earned a 76-63 victory at Minnesota.

The No. 10 Terps (25-5, 13-4) will finish second. Like the Badgers, they'll receive a double bye. Both teams will finish the regular season on the road Sunday, with Maryland facing Nebraska and the Badgers taking on Ohio State.

Frank Kaminsky led Wisconsin (27-3, 15-2) with 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting, and Sam Dekker added 20. Nigel Hayes had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Badgers, who had at least a tie for first place already wrapped up last weekend. This is Wisconsin's fourth title under coach Bo Ryan and the first in seven years.

The Badgers made seven of their first 10 attempts from 3-point range and finished with 18 assists against just nine turnovers.

Nate Mason had 15 points and Carlos Morris added 11 for the Gophers (17-13, 6-11), who fell behind by 20 points in the first half.

More men's college basketball: Maryland's Mark Turgeon has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the Naismith National Coach of the Year award. Under Turgeon, the Terps have 25 victories this season; their eight-game improvement from 2013-14 is tied for the second-most among Power Five schools. In addition, Maryland reached the Associated Press top 10 for first time since Feb. 3, 2003.

College football: Samuel John "Buzz" Irvine III, who played center on Maryland's national champion team in 1953, died last Friday of cancer, according to Trib Total Media of Western Pennsylvania. He was 81. Butler graduated in 1955 and was selected 86th overall in the NFL draft by the Chicago Cardinals. He played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League.

Men's college lacrosse: Navy junior goalie John Connors was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Defensive Player of the Week.

Cary Williams has visit scheduled with Seahawks

Former Philadelphia Eagles and Ravens cornerback Cary Williams was scheduled to visit the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, according to NFL sources. The Seahawks could use Williams as a replacement for departing cornerback Byron Maxwell, who is expected to command $8 million to $10 million annually as one of the top free agents at the position. Williams is interested in possibly returning to the Ravens, and the feeling is mutual, according to sources.

Honor: Former Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain of the New York Giants is among five finalists for the Byron "Whizzer" White Award, which the NFL Players Association hands out to recognize the player who goes above and beyond to perform community service.

Redskins: Seeking a new team, former Oakland Raiders strong safety Tyvon Branch will visit Redskins Park, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed. An eight-year veteran, the 6-foot, 210-pound Branch has spent his entire career with the Raiders.

Blast's Dantas, Obasi voted to MASL All-Rookie team

Blast forward Vini Dantas and defender Onua Obasi were among seven players voted to the Major Arena Soccer League's All-Rookie team. Dantas finished third on the Blast with 16 goals and sixth in points with 20. Obasi had nine goals and 10 assists, and contributed to a defense that allowed just 69 goals.

National Women's Soccer League: The Washington Spirit signed its three college draft selections: defenders Whitney Church, Caprice Dydasco and Megan Oyster.

Horse racing: Laurel Park canceled its live program and its simulcast programs Thursday because of weather conditions. Live racing is scheduled to resume today with a 12:30 p.m. first-race post time and a $29,500 Pick 5 jackpot carry-over.

Minor league basketball: The Bay Area Shuckers of the American Professional Basketball League signed guard Jermaine Bolden, a former All-Metro performer at Douglass and the 2008-09 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference assist leader at Morgan State.

Varsity boys basketball: Montez Mathis scored 15 points to lead No. 5 Mount Carmel (29-8) to a 65-40 victory over Lanham Christian (10-14) in Wednesday's opening round of the Maryland Private School Championship at Bullis. The Cougars advance to the quarterfinals and will face St. Mary's-Ryken (13-12) at Riverdale Baptist when conditions allow.
