With the possibility of losing several starters after next season, one of Mark Turgeon's priorities this spring was adding a transfer who could give his 2016-17 Maryland men's basketball team more experience.
Terry Larrier, a 6-foot-8 freshman wing at Virginia Commonwealth and former top-40 recruit, is transferring, and the Terps and Connecticut are considered the favorites, according to CBS Sports.
Larrier visited College Park this week, InsideMDSports.com reported.
After averaging 6.6 points and three rebounds in 18.5 minutes a game as a freshman, Larrier announced he was transferring when Shaka Smart left to become the coach at Texas.
Larrier finished the season with a strong performance in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament, averaging nearly 10 points and six rebounds in VCU's four-game run to the championship.
Despite shooting 7-for-29 from the field during the tournament, Larrier hit 17 of 18 free throws. For the season, Larrier shot only 34.3 percent from the field and 26.2 percent from beyond the arc. He was nearly a 71 percent shooter at the free-throw line.
Those who have watched Larrier play liken his skill set to that of Jake Layman. Layman averaged 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in a little under 20 minutes as a freshman, shooting a shade under 40 percent from the field, 30 percent on 3-pointers and 70 percent at the line.
Maryland recruited Larrier out of high school but backed off after receiving a commitment from Jared Nickens, a less well-regarded four-star prospect.
Larrier was considered among the top 10 small forwards in the country during his senior year at The Phelps School in Pennsylvania.
