Mark Turgeon's first paying job as a 14-year-old in Topeka, Kan., was working at Baskin-Robbins.
Long before he became known as "Turgeon the Surgeon" dishing out assists for Larry Brown at Kansas, he was scooping out sundaes.
"I think I was making $1.65 an hour," Turgeon recalled Monday. "I was so little that I would get a lot of tips. I could barely reach the counter."
Turgeon still has something of a sweet tooth when it comes to ice cream. He also now has his own flavor - Turge Turtle Crunch.
As part of a social media campaign that attracted more than 100 suggestions from fans, the Maryland men's basketball coach joined fellow coaches Randy Edsall ("Rockin' Randy") and Brenda Frese ("Peanut Butter Frese") in having an ice cream flavor named in his honor.
The ice cream, which will be made by the campus dairy, will be sold at home games next season.
"Hopefully they'll sell a lot of scoops," Turgeon said.
Turge Turtle Crunch is a takeoff on the coach's favorite flavor growing up - Jamoca Almond Fudge. Instead of coffee ice cream, it is made with vanilla bean base, chocolate syrup, bits of vanilla wafers and salted nuts.
"It's pretty good," he said. "Hopefully we can make some money."
