Top quarterback recruit Dwayne Haskins Jr. '110 percent committed' to Terps

So InsideMDSports.com caught up with the Bullis star this weekend for clarification on his potential visit to Gainesville and the status of his commitment.

"I didn't say I'd take an official or anything; I said I had thought about taking a visit to Florida," Haskins said. "I probably won't because I know how Edsall feels about his commitments taking other visits."

With a long list of top schools interested in Haskins, Maryland's staff will be counting the days until he can make his commitment official by signing a national letter of intent. But with that day many months away, should the Terps be worried about the quarterback?

"I'm set on Maryland. I'm definitely 110 percent committed, there's no question about that," Haskins said. Terps commit Jeffery Pooler "texted me that he'll be at Maryland this week. He gets in on Thursday, but I have camp, so I'll head up on Friday and see him. That's the only visit I have on my mind."

It's been a busy summer for Haskins, who recently competed at The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. Haskins, focused on feedback and instruction rather than winning, showcased his pinpoint accuracy and smart decision making, earning honors as one of the most impressive pro-style quarterbacks in the class; he was ranked third among the Elite 11 quarterbacks by 247Sports.

"It was a great experience. Going to Oregon has always been something I've dreamed about. It was a great event, and I was able to meet a lot of guys that I've seen on social media and stuff like that. I loved competing and playing with a lot of my friends. I had a great time; it was definitely a great experience," Haskins said.

Haskins led Team Superbad to an impressive outing, teaming with a pair of local receivers in Maryland commit D.J. Turner (DeMatha) and top target Trevon Diggs (Avalon School).

"With those two, I feel like we all have a really good understanding of how each of us play, and it helps us play really well. D.J. played great, but we all kind of think we have an advantage when we play together," Haskins said.

In between leading his team in the 7-on-7 tournament, Haskins made time to talk about Maryland with players from around the country.

"One guy that I was pretty surprised had interest in Maryland was [four-star Louisiana running back] Devin White," Haskins said. "He talked about Maryland a bit, and then a couple of days later, he got the offer with Maryland, so I'm going to start working on him a bit. But the rest of the guys were guys that Maryland is already looking at."

Haskins hasn't given up on the stay-at-home movement despite a recent slowdown in commitments. Maryland's biggest recruiting asset is aware of his sway and has used his commitment as leverage when speaking to other recruits.

"I've been recruiting Marcus Simms, Tino Ellis, Terrance Davis a little, Naseir Upshur, Trevon Diggs, David Reese, Keith Simms," he said. "Those are my guys right now, but the three biggest are Tino, Trevon and Upshur."

"I'm focusing on bringing in receivers to Maryland, and I know the staff wants guys like Marcus Simms, Trevon and Tino."

Though Diggs could line up at defensive back for the Terps, Haskins likes the idea of Simms, Ellis and Turner at receiver.

"I think the three of us have great chemistry; that's the biggest thing. I've worked out with a lot of these guys, so I know their routes, their route-running skills, when they want the ball, so it helps me because I already have a leg up on what helps them most," he said.

Long said to be "package deal," Haskins and Diggs haven't solidified their future together yet. Diggs was scheduled to announce his college decision July 4, but canceled and continues to consider other schools like Alabama and Georgia.

"That's my brother. We are definitely close," Haskins said. "I was talking to him a lot at The Opening. We both know each other's tendencies, how he likes his balls, when to get it to him. I'm definitely pushing hard for Maryland, and he's listening, so I'm just doing what I can with him."

With one year left in high school, Haskins isn't focused on only his future at Maryland.

"Senior year is supposed to be your best year of high school. I'm looking forward for going out to Bullis and leading them. We have high expectations for this year, and I want to do everything to get us there," he said.

"After my senior year, it's all Maryland. I'm definitely looking forward to getting to college, learning the playbook and leading the Terps to championships."
