Terps football tentatively will open against William & Mary on Sept. 1

The Maryland football team is tentatively scheduled to open the 2012 season at home on Sept. 1 vs William & Mary, followed by games at Temple on  Sept. 8, home against Connecticut on  Sept. 15 and at West Virginia on Sept. 22.

The matchups have not yet been officially announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the schedule is far enough along that the school has been given nonconference opponents and dates.

Maryland's home conference schedule (no dates yet available) will feature Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Florida State and Wake Forest.

The road conference schedule will have games against Boston College, Virginia, North Carolina and Clemson.

The ACC announced Friday that football teams will switch to a nine-game conference schedule and basketball to an 18-game league schedule once Pitt and Syracuse arrive.

Other football notes:

* Coach Randy Edsall expects both top Terps QBs back but says Danny O'Brien may be limited in spring practices as his injured arm heals.

* Edsall says defensive line coach Greg Gattuso will be given title of assistant head coach -- the No. 2 guy.

* Terps offensive lineman Pete DeSouza won't be able to continue his playing career but will be student coach. He had suffered injuries in scooter accident.

* Terps linebacker Desmond Kearse will no longer be on the team for academic reasons, Edsall said.
