Former Gilman star and ESPN four-star recruit Shane Cockerille will be moving from quarterback to fullback on the Maryland football team, the program announced Monday.

Additionally, the Terps have added former North Carolina tight end Avery Edwards, who was charged with felony larceny for stealing more than $50,000 of jewelry, according to police, in June 2014.

Cockerille came to coach Randy Edsall about a month ago and asked if he could switch positions. The Terps have a number of options under center with upperclassmen Daxx Garman, Caleb Rowe and Perry Hills.

After their conversation, Edsall and Cockerille settled on fullback as the best position for him.

"I felt this would give him the best opportunity to get on the field and utilize his skillset," Edsall said Monday.

In his chance to prove himself at quarterback in the Terps' spring game on April 11, Cockerille completed 5 of 20 pass attempts for 91 yards and an interception. He hasn't attempted a pass during a regular season game since joining the Terps.

Cavon Walker, meanwhile, will move from linebacker to defensive end. The junior played in two games last season, but he missed most of the season with a foot injury.

As for Edwards, the Terps looked at him two years ago when he was in high school, but the Raleigh, N.C., native committed to his state school instead.

Edwards never played for the Tar Heels, though, after he was arrested. The charges have since been dismissed, according to court documents, and Edwards trained at IMG Academy last season.

"I have had great discussions with Avery since we first made contact and throughout his visit to campus," Edsall said in a statement. "I am confident he has learned from past experiences and will be a great teammate as he makes a seamless transition to the University of Maryland. Avery has a relentless work ethic and strong desire to succeed both on and off the field."

The former three-star recruit enrolled in classes Monday, the start of Maryland's second summer term.

"I have grown immensely over the past year and I am eager to join my new teammates on the field and represent Maryland this fall," Edwards said in a statement.

The Terps also announced they have hired Bryce Bevill as director of player development and Cory Robinson as director of player personnel.
