COLLEGE PARK — Melo Trimble saw video of the shot once he returned to Maryland's locker room after the Terps' win over Michigan State on Saturday.
Asked during postgame interviews if he had seen the pull-up 3-pointer, the Terps' standout freshman point guard immediately smiled.
"I saw it," Trimble said, still smiling. "It's nice. It's one game. Just got to move on to the next and stay humble."
This was the latest signature moment for Trimble and the perfect cap to a sensational first half for the freshman from Bishop O'Connell in Virginia.
Trimble had already scored 18 points in the first half and hit four 3-pointers in helping the Terps build an 11-point lead as time ran down before halftime.
This was the exclamation point.
Guarded by Michigan State's Lourawls Nairn Jr., Trimble began to make his move toward the basket as the clock got down to seven seconds. Once at the top of the key, Trimble made a quick, between-the-legs dribble that caused Nairn Jr. to stumble backwards, fall down and watch from one knee as Trimble raised up to hit a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Trimble has produced plenty of highlights at the high school, Amateur Athletic Union and college levels. But this was a first for Trimble.
"I'd never made someone fall. I've never made a move like that in my life," Trimble said. "I was pretty excited."
Trimble began to backpedal toward midcourt as he released the shot and emphatically pumped his fist when the shot went in. Teammates -- such as Dez Wells and Jared Nickens -- mobbed Trimble seconds later, once the half ended.
"I didn't know what to do," Trimble said, smiling. "I was glad the clock was running down because I had already started celebrating. It was pretty exciting."
