Maryland point guard Melo Trimble has been named one of 16 finalists to make the 12-man roster for the 2015 U.S. Pan-American men's basketball team.
The rising sophomore was one of 22 players invited to the tryout and has now made the first cut. The finalists will continue competing at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., until July 12. A decision on the final 12-man roster is expected before then.
The tournament at the Pan American games will be held from July 21-25 in Toronto.
While Trimble is the only Maryland player vying for a spot, Terps coach Mark Turgeon has been serving as a court coach during the training camp. Trimble helped reinvigorate the Maryland program as the floor general last season. He averaged a team-best 16.2 points per game en route to earning First Team All-Big Ten honors.
Trimble is joined by Ron Baker (Wichita State), Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia), Bobby Brown (Dongguan Leopards, China), Isaiah Cousins (Oklahoma), Kellen Dunham (Butler), Nigel Hayes (Wisconsin), Ryan Hollins (Sacramento Kings), Keith Langford (UNICS Kazan), Shawn Long (Louisiana), Taurean Prince (Baylor), Anthony Randolph (Lokomotiv-Kuban), Kaleb Tarczewski (Arizona), Denzel Valentine (Michigan State), Fred Van Vleet (Wichita State) and Damien Wilkins (Indios de Mayagüez) as the 16 finalists.
