Terps' Jake Layman named Big Ten Player of the Week, plus a note on the polls

Junior forward Jake Layman was honored as the Big Ten Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league announced Monday.

Layman, who also was picked as the conference's Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 22, averaged 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in Maryland's two victories over Rutgers and Michigan State at Xfinity Center last week.

In the Terps' 73-65 win over Rutgers on Wednesday, Layman had 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He followed that with a season-high 23 points and 12 rebounds as Maryland routed Michigan State, 75-59, on Saturday.

So far this season, Layman is averaging 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

In other news, the two wins last week helped Maryland to move up in both the Associated Press and USA Today Top 25 rankings. The Terps climbed one spot to No. 13 in the AP poll, and they moved up three spots to No. 8 in the USA Today poll.

Maryland will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to play No. 23 Indiana on Thursday at 9 p.m. before returning to College Park to host Northwestern on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
