During the summer, Maryland safety Sean Davis was asked about the value of Terps wide receiver Levern Jacobs and how he foresaw Jacobs fitting into a wide receiver corps that also included standouts Stefon Diggs and Deon Long.
"I feel like Stefon has a big target on his back, and it's good to have a player just as good as Stefon," Davis said of Jacobs.
Diggs is gone, having recently decided to forgo his senior season at Maryland and enter the NFL draft. Long is gone, as well.
Still, wide receiver remains a strength for Maryland heading into next season despite the returning lettermen lacking the name recognition of Diggs and Long.
Jacobs will likely be the leader of the group, returning after sitting out this season while serving a university issued season-long suspension.
A rising redshirt junior, Jacobs had 47 catches for 640 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2013, stepping up after Diggs and Long both suffered season-ending injuries.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Suitland graduate was slated to be Maryland's starting slot receiver before being suspended.
The Terps will also have other talent back, such as rising senior Marcus Leak, redshirt freshman Taivon Jacobs, rising junior Amba Etta-Tawo and rising sophomore Juwann Winfree.
Leak started seven games this season and had 20 catches for 297 yards and three touchdowns.
Taivon Jacobs, Levern's younger brother, is considered the fastest player on Maryland's roster and had standout moments during preseason practice before suffering a season-ending knee injury shortly into the Terps' first game.
Etta-Tawo is 6 feet 1, 200 pounds with long arms and, according to teammates, narrowly lost a race to the younger Jacobs last year. Etta-Tawo had a 71-yard touchdown catch-and-run against Rutgers in Maryland's regular season finale and has 41 catches for 722 yards and three touchdowns in two years with the Terps.
Winfree is an up-and-comer, a former four-star recruit who had 11 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns in eight games as a freshman this season.
Maryland will also have others competing for playing time at wide receiver, such as rising junior Jacquille Veii and rising redshirt freshman Will Ulmer, a four-star recruit who is among the fastest and most elusive players on the Terps' roster.
Wide receiver was considered to be one of Maryland's primary strengths heading into this season and will remain a strength, even after losing Diggs and Long.
