Terps commit Kevin Huerter to try out for U.S. U-18 team

If all goes well for Kevin Huerter, the Maryland basketball commit will get to play under coach Mark Turgeon before his Terps career even begins.

Huerter, a 6-foot-6, 180-pound guard from Clifton Park, N.Y., has made the training camp roster for the U.S. U-18 basketball team, which will compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in July in Chile. Turgeon is an assistant coach on that team, under Texas coach Shaka Smart.

Huerter said in an interview Wednesday that he found out about the invitation a month ago from Turgeon and assistant coach Dustin Clark, who did the bulk of the recruiting over the past year. The team was announced earlier in the day.

A four-star prospect who was rated No. 49 nationally by ESPN, Huerter won Mr. Basketball for New York State as a senior at Shenendehowa High, where a special logo with his likeness will be put on T-shirts the team will wear in the future.

"Í think I've come a long way, I never really thought about this being a possibility a couple of years ago," Huerter said. "Playing on the U.S. team or even going to try out for one didn't seem to be my vision of what I thought I could possibly get to. To have something like this happen, and to get to play under Coach Turgeon a little earlier than the fall for a little bit should be a good experience."

Huerter is among 26 players competing to make the 12-man roster. Training camp is from June 14-18 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and from July 11-15 in Houston.

Other local players on the tryout list include former DeMatha standouts Markelle Fultz (Upper Marlboro) and DJ Harvey (Bowie).
