Rowe's injury leaves Maryland's backup QB situation 'fluid,' Durkin says

COLLEGE PARK — One of the glaring omissions from the Maryland depth chart new coach DJ Durkin released Monday was that former starting quarterback Caleb Rowe's name was nowhere to be found.

Rowe, who had missed a little more than a week at the start of preseason camp with an undisclosed injury, is now "probable" for Saturday's season opener against Howard at Maryland Stadium, Durkin said.

"He's practicing now, he's back on the field, he's doing stuff, he's not 100 percent," first-year Maryland coach DJ Durkin said during Tuesday's news conference.

While Rowe will likely suit up for the opener, it is unlikely he will play, even in a blowout.

Durkin added that the time Rowe missed because of injury is "probably indicative of why the depth chart looks the way it does right now."

True freshmen Tyrrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager are listed as co-No. 2s behind redshirt senior Perry Hills, who is expected to start a season opener for the third time in his career.

"Those two freshmen have really shown things at times, they've got a chance to really help us, help us win," Durkin said. "Not at a consistent level, which you would expect from a freshman. We're going to keep working with them."

Durkin, who described the backup quarterback situation as "fluid," said he is "open" to the idea of playing more than one quarterback in a game.

"We're open to all options," Durkin said. "We're going to do whatever it takes to win games. We're going to figure out each week what gives us the best opportunity to win. If that means playing more than one quarterback at a time ... Walt [Bell, the offensive coordinator] as a play caller is well-versed in many different things."
