Questions facing the Terps football team heading into the offseason

The Maryland football team recently completed its first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference, finishing with a 7-6 record, including 4-4 in conference play.

Here are the top questions facing coach Randy Edsall and the Terps heading into the offseason:

Can Maryland build on its recent success in recruiting?

Maryland still has significant work to do for its Class of 2015, even after landing four-star defensive lineman Adam McLean.

The Terps appear to be in good shape with four-star offensive tackle Isaiah Prince (Eleanor Roosevelt) and four-star offensive guard Quarvez Boulware (Friendship Collegiate Academy).

Landing both would be big for this recruiting class, as well as for the future of an offensive line that was probably Maryland's most consistent problem area throughout this season.

The Terps also are in search of talent along the defensive line, as they lose starting defensive end Andre Monroe, starting nose tackle Darius Kilgo and key contributor Keith Bowers.

In addition, Maryland has done a good job selling top local recruits on the idea of a "hometown movement" and appears to be in a position to land verbal commitments from high-profile Class of 2016 talents such as quarterback Dwayne Haskins (Bullis) in the coming months.

Can Maryland land a graduate transfer at quarterback to compete with returning lettermen Caleb Rowe, Shane Cockerille and Perry Hills?

C.J. Brown is gone, leaving the Terps without a clear answer at quarterback heading into next season.

While Rowe has potential and has a great arm, he is a questionable decision-maker who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in October that will likely keep him from participating in organized football activities until preseason practice in August.

That has Maryland in the market for a quarterback who can play immediately and, at the very least, push Rowe, Hills and Cockerille for the Terps' starting quarterback job.

Maryland likely would have been interested in adding a quarterback even if Rowe had not been injured, given some of the potential options.

Former Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel was one option before he decided to transfer to Louisiana Tech. Even with Driskel off the market, potential options include productive and established players like Stanford's Kevin Hogan and Notre Dame's Everett Golson, as many pundits are speculating that both may transfer.

Maryland also has reached out to the high school coach of Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty, according to a source. Doughty plans to stay at Western Kentucky, per the source. But that could change if Western Kentucky coach Jeff Brohm leaves for another job.

Doughty threw for 4,830 yards with 49 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions this season.

Will Edsall receive a contract extension?

All signs point to yes.

Edsall has just two years remaining on the six-year contract that he signed in 2011. Not extending Edsall's contract would put Maryland in a difficult position recruiting-wise, as other schools could use Edsall's lack of long-term security as a reason for recruits not to sign with the Terps.

Regardless, it seems like athletic director Kevin Anderson wants his coach around for the long haul, as Edsall has helped Maryland improve significantly academically while also leading the Terps to just their third back-to-back winning seasons since 1985.
