Maryland picked up a punter this week. After coach Randy Edsall went to American Heritage School (Fla.) on Monday, Nick Rubinowicz felt comfortable enough to commit to Edsall and become the 20th oral commitment in the Class of 2015.
"Coach Edsall came to my school, and we had a really good convo. Need for a punter, so just a good situation and for the team, and I thought it would be a good fit. I felt good about it, and didn't need to think about it too much. I made my decision a couple hours later," he said.
Rubinowicz picked the Terps over an offer from Princeton and walk-on spots from California, Pittsburgh and Virginia, but Rubinowicz knew Maryland was the choice.
"It felt like a good opportunity, plus academics played a big deal," he said. "The connections with Under Armour can really help later in life, plus Maryland has a top-50 business school, which is what I want to major in."
Rubinowicz knows playing time is up for grabs with junior Nathan Renfro leaving the program, but he's not obsessed with early playing time.
"I know I can come in and make an impact, and Coach Edsall said they have a need at punter, so I just felt comfortable with everything," he said. "I'll have a chance to meet more players and commits this weekend. I'm taking an official [visit] on Friday and I'll probably go with my dad."
Maryland also will bring in walk-on Nick Pritchard.
Rubinowicz was named second-team all-state in his junior year and first-team all-state in his senior year, earning him a 4.5-star rating on kohlskicking.com. You can watch Rubinowicz's highlights from his senior season here.
