UPDATE (7:25): Maryland point guard Melo Trimble suffered a concussion Sunday night against West Virginia, a men's basketball team spokesman said Monday night, and will continue to be monitored.
Trimble was cleared to fly back to College Park with the rest of the team on Monday morning, the spokesman said.
The star freshman left the Terps' 69-59 loss to West Virginia Sunday in Columbus, Ohio, with what the team had termed only a "head injury." He was not taken to a hospital after the game, the spokesman said.
Trimble was knocked out of the Terps' third-round NCAA tournament game twice.
He was dropped by a hard screen from West Virginia forward Nathan Adrian early in the second half. He returned to the game but left again for good at the 8:25 mark after he was accidentally kicked in the back of the head by teammate Damonte Dodd.
Without their floor general, the Terps (28-7) couldn't handle the Mountaineers' relentless pressure, leading to their elimination a step shy of the Sweet 16.
"Obviously, Melo is pretty important to us," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said after the game. "And lucky for us, he's been healthy all year. That's pretty amazing. We have one point guard in our program, and a really good one in Melo. And it's the first time all year that he couldn't play. He took a beating tonight.
"So would the outcome been different? We don't know. But we obviously weren't the same without him out there."
