Meet Maryland quarterback commitment Shane Cockerille

As four Maryland quarterbacks went down with season-ending injuries, a perfectly healthy Shane Cockerille couldn't help but feel a sense of helplessness.

The Gilman senior watched from the Byrd Stadium stands as his future team struggled through a 4-8 season, knowing if he were just a year older it would be him under center for the Terps.

"It was very frustrating to be up there, be committed, knowing you could be playing," Cockerille said. "They could have easily had seven or eight wins and be in a bowl game. It was frustrating, but I know coming into this year, with this class and last year's class, I'm excited. I can't wait."

An Elite 11 selection, Cockerille grew up rooting for the Terps. He plans to take advantage of his proximity to College Park by attending team meetings during spring practice.

"It's a huge advantage on my part," he said. "I just think I … [have to] be ready to compete. They'll put the best guy on the field."

Cockerille, a wrestler who has been lauded by football scouts for his toughness, has heard positive things about Maryland's football program from former Gilman teammate Kenneth Goins, a redshirt freshman fullback for the Terps.

"I think [Maryland football is] coming back up," Cockerille said. "I think the years to come will be awesome."
