Meet Maryland linebacker commitment Cavon Walker

Cavon Walker transferred from Dunbar in D.C. to Friendship Collegiate Academy before his 11th-grade year, promptly fractured his foot and missed his entire junior season. The move to FCA was due in part to Walker's desire to compete for a championship. Needless to say, the injury was devastating to the Maryland-bound linebacker.

"It was the worst thing ever to watch a team play when you can't do anything about it if they're losing, and if they're winning, you want to be a part of it," Walker said. "The injury was horrible. I don't even want to talk about it."

With the disappointment of his junior season in mind, Walker worked hard last summer to get back to full strength.

"That was very important. I wasn't missing my senior year," Walker said. "I love this game and I want to play. I had to prove to people that I wasn't still injured. And I came out better than ever."

Thanks in large part to the play of Walker and fellow Terps commitments Derwin Gray and Jermaine Carter, Friendship Collegiate won the first-ever D.C. Statewide Athletic Association football championship.

"You could say that we stuck together," Walker said of his current and future teammates.

Even though Walker, Gray and Carter are close, Walker said he would've committed to Maryland no matter what his teammates decided to do.

"When I first went to [a Maryland game], the crowd was so amazing," he said. "I was in awe of everything there – the facilities, I had a couple friends on the team already, and the coaching staff. Randy Edsall is a wonderful man, and [offensive coordinator Mike] Locksley."

Walker said he already knows Maryland linebacker Alex Twine, wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Deon Long, quarterback Ricardo Young and running back Albert Reid, an FCA alum.

"Maryland is doing a good job in the area," Walker said. "Instead of going far, you can stay here [and recruit]. Why not?"
