Maryland, West Virginia in talks to continue football rivalry in the 2020s

West Virginia, which has long been one of Maryland's most important football rivals, disappears from the schedule after 2017.

But the two schools are actively talking about renewing the rivalry after that, according to West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck.

"I've already had a conversation with [Maryland athletic director] Kevin [Anderson] about looking to add games on," Luck told The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday.

Maryland and West Virginia meet in a 3:30 p.m. game Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium, and the Terps and Mountaineers are scheduled to play in each of the following four seasons.

They aren't scheduled to play in 2018 or 2019. Luck said the current discussions focus on games between the schools in the 2020s.

"I would say it's a very good rivalry," said Luck, who participated in the series as West Virginia's quarterback. He split two games with Maryland in his Mountaineers career -- in 1980 and 1981, respectively.

The schools have played 49 times. The Mountaineers have won the past seven games.
