Maryland backup quarterback Caleb Rowe tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice Tuesday morning and will miss the rest of the season.
Rowe, a redshirt junior, likely won't be able to work out with the team until preseason practice next August, when he had been expected to take over for current senior C.J. Brown as starting quarterback.
Video of the play shows Rowe running a zone-read play to his left. When he attempts to cut upfield, his left foot appears to hit his right calf. Without contact, Rowe comes down awkwardly on his left foot.
The knee did not appear to buckle, and Rowe ran for about 10 more yards before he started hopping on his right leg.
This is the second time he has torn the ACL in his left knee. Rowe, who will have surgery next week, suffered the same injury as a redshirt freshman in 2012.
With Rowe out, redshirt sophomore Perry Hills will back up Brown, although redshirt freshman Shane Cockerille (Gilman) could see time in certain packages if Brown is injured.
Rowe has company on the injury report. Freshman nose tackle David Shaw is week-to-week with a knee injury he suffered in practice. Maryland also will be without backup safety Zach Dancel, backup running back Albert Reid and long snapper Christian Carpenter today against Iowa.
Safety Denzel Conyers, who is academically ineligible to play this year, will have ankle surgery next week.
On a positive note for the Terps, outside linebacker Matt Robinson (Atholton) will be back today after missing the past three games with a shoulder injury.
