Maryland point guard Melo Trimble has been invited to try out for the U.S. team going to the Pan American Games in Toronto later this summer.
The 20-year-old Trimble, who will be a sophomore in College Park, is among the youngest of the 22 players vying for 12 spots on a team coached by Gonzaga's Mark Few.
"I am very humbled to have this opportunity," Trimble said in a statement released by the athletic department. "I am looking forward to learning from an outstanding coaching staff and playing with so many talented players. This experience will be beneficial as I continue to work on my overall game."
Maryland coach Mark Turgeon will serve as a floor coach during the team's training camp in Colorado Springs.
"This is a very well-deserving honor for Melo," Turgeon said. "I know he will work very hard and this will be a tremendous experience for him. Melo will also have the opportunity to play with and compete against an outstanding group of players."
Said Trimble, "It's great to have Coach Turgeon out there with me. I am happy that he will have chance to watch me play as I have put in a lot of hard work over the summer."
Trimble will be competing against players such as Wichita State's Fred VanVleet and Iowa State's Monte Morris at point guard.
Several Big Ten players will be among those trying out, including Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, Purdue's Isaac Haas, Wisconsin's Nigel Hayes and Malcolm Hill of Illinois.
Trimble is currently working out with Stephen Curry of the world champion Golden State Warriors after being one of four college and four high point guards invited to a camp by the reigning NBA MVP.
The camp roster is a mix of current and former college players, as well as current and former NBA players, including Ryan Hollins of the Sacramento Kings and Damien Wilkens, who is now playing professionally in Puerto Rico.
