Maryland announced this morning that it will take part in a football and wrestling doubleheader against Rutgers at Yankee Stadium in 2017. The "Big Ten Battle in the Bronx" will be hosted by Rutgers on Nov. 4.
The outdoor wrestling match will precede the football game later in the afternoon. It's the first outdoor wrestling match at Yankee Stadium.
In a statement, Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said "we are thrilled to participate in such a prestigious event at one of the world's most iconic sporting venues.
"I am excited that our fans will have the opportunity to view both our football and wrestling programs on such a unique platform. We look forward to working with the New York Yankees, the Big Ten Conference and Rutgers University to make this a memorable event for all," Anderson said.
Maryland leads the all-time football series against Rutgers, 6-5, dating back to 1920. The teams have split their two Big Ten meetings.
"Playing in Yankee Stadium will be something that excites our players, staff and fan base. It's truly a unique opportunity and we're looking forward to it," Maryland football coach DJ Durkin said.
Ticket information for the "Big Ten Battle in the Bronx" is still to be announced.
"As a New York native, this definitely holds special value with me and will be a unique opportunity to showcase and grow our sport," Maryland wrestling coach Kerry McCoy said.
