COLLEGE PARK — Senior running back Trey Edmunds is out indefinitely with a broken right foot, Maryland coach DJ Durkin announced at his Tuesday news conference.
Durkin said that the foot had been bothering Edmunds for a while, but after rolling his ankle in practice Monday, an X-ray revealed a fracture. Durkin said that Edmunds will have surgery later this week.
Edmunds, the son of former Maryland tight end standout Ferrell Edmunds, had transferred from Virginia Tech after three seasons and was allowed to play immediately following graduation.
Durkin called the injury "very unfortunate" and said that Edmunds will be out "several weeks." Edmunds carried the ball 26 times for 158 yards and a touchdown, and also recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season opener against Howard.
Though Edmunds' role as a running back had been diminished in recent weeks by the emergence of freshman Lorenzo Harrison and sophomore Ty Johnson, the team's top rushers, Edmunds had been a big contributor on special teams as well as a leader in the locker room.
"There's not a finer young man. Trey has done anything and everything that's been asked of him since he's been here with our team," Durkin said. "Although he's been with us only for this season, we consider him a leader. He's a great teammate to everyone, just phenomenal [playing] unselfish football in a great rotation of running backs and special teams."
