Maryland wide receiver Juwann Winfree has been suspended indefinitely for violating the school's student-athlete code of conduct, the team announced Monday.
Winfree was also suspended for the final two regular-season games last season for violating the student-athlete code of conduct.
Winfree is the second wide receiver to leave the team in the past two weeks, following the departure of Marcus Leak for what was described as "personal" issues.
As a freshman, Winfree played in eight games, catching 11 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Winfree was expected to be in the mix at receiver in 2015, particularly after Leak's departure.
Two sources familiar with Winfree's situation said the suspension did not result from a failed drug test. (Multiple failed drug tests have been one reason Maryland athletes have been suspended in the past).
As of 9 p.m. Monday, no charges had been filed against Winfree according to online court records.
There was no comment from either Maryland coach Randy Edsall or athletic director Kevin Anderson regarding Winfree's suspension.
