Turgeon calls Terps' basketball scrimmage 'sloppy'

Maryland basketball coach Mark Turgeon extended Saturday's open scrimmage for an extra 10-minute period because he said he wanted to see more "flow" from his players.

"I didn't like a lot (about it)," the coach said. "Really sloppy. We weren't going to play that last 10 minutes but I didn't feel we were getting anything out of it."

Turgeon said his team fouled too much during the scrimmage.

More notes from the Comcast Center scrimmage:

* Still no word from the NCAA on the eligibility this season of Penn State transfer Jonathan Graham, who is seeking a hardship waiver that would allow him to play immediately.

* Jake Layman continued to shine in the preseason, showing off his range from beyond the arc. His nine first-half points were a team high.

* Charles Mitchell looks more active this season – leaner and quicker. Maryland needs either the forward or fellow big man Shaq Cleare to finish better around the basket this season.

* When new point guard Seth Allen made a first-half steal, it reminded me of how adept he can be at this. He thinks like a defensive back anticipating a pass. He had five steals in his Comast Center debut last season against Indiana (Pa.).

Allen will be a different sort of point guard than many because he's such a scoring threat. Freshman Roddy Peters, Allen's backup, is more of a traditional facilitator.
