For a weekend with numerous recruits in attendance, none may have been bigger for Maryland than Dwyer (Fla.) safety Shawn Boone. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect was in College Park on an official visit Saturday through Monday and caught up with InsideMDSports on Monday night to discuss how things went.
Boone still has two more official visits to take before deciding.
“It was good,” Boone said. “I hung out with the players, talked to the coaches a lot, went out to dinner and all that stuff.”
Boone was hosted by fellow south Florida defensive back Will Likely, and the two talked a lot about the program and the coaching staff.
“He was telling me the truth about everything up therem, about how the coaches are and how Coach [Brian] Stewart is,” said Boone. “He said I could come up, get playing time and make an impact, because that’s what he’s done. He was just being honest with me. He wasn’t really trying to convince me to go there.”
On Monday, Boone checked in with Randy Edsall, Brian Stewart and the rest of the coaching staff before boarding his flight home.
“They were just telling me how much I can make an impact there,” he said. “They said I can come in and make an impact right away if I do what I have to do.”
“Being around the players and coaches” is what Boone said stood out the most, but what really caught his eye was the one part of his trip that was different than the rest – the technical discussion with Coach Stewart.
“It was a lot different,” he said. “The schemes and the different coaching styles for the defense, they were all different.”
“It was an overall good trip.”
Boone still plans to take his official visits to Ole Miss and Penn State, having already visited Arkansas and North Carolina State. After that, he says he will make a final decision on national signing day. He says he has no leaders currently.
Boone received a three-star, .8432-rating in the 247Composite as the nation’s 77th-ranked safety.
