A Prince George's County judge found former Maryland linebacker Alex Twine not guilty Wednesday on a charge of second-degree misdemeanor assault stemming from an incident last July in College Park.
Twine and teammate Levern Jacobs were accused by two fellow students of assaulting them near campus. The charge against Jacobs was later dropped, though he was not allowed to play for the Terps during the 2014 season.
After a three-hour trial in which five of the eight witnesses testified on behalf of Twine, District Court Judge Lisa Johnson found reasonable doubt and ruled in Twine's favor, according to his attorney, David Zwanetz. Twine also testified, Zwanetz said.
A cellphone video of the melee was shown in court, Zwanetz said.
"He always maintained his innocence and I believe this is a simple case of misidentification," Zwanetz wrote in a text message to The Baltimore Sun.
Zwanetz said Twine, who played at Quince Orchard High in North Potomac, is expected to graduate in May. He will take part in the football team's Pro Day in April.
