During a radio interview last week with Albany's WTMM (104.5 FM), Maryland men's basketball assistant coach Dustin Clark was asked about Kevin Huerter, an upstate New Yorker and incoming Terps recruit. Clark must be "thrilled" to have the Shenendehowa (N.Y.) star coming to campus, one of the hosts said."Yeah, I would just like to get him on campus," Clark said. "Heck, he's on this world tour. So I wish he'd finish messing around and get to campus for us."A week-plus stop in Valdivia, Chile for the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship isn't exactly Formation World Tour levels of "world tour," but Huerter's summer is on the verge of a blockbuster moment all the same. One of 12 players named last week to the national team, Huerter and the U.S. will open play at 1:30 p.m. today against Puerto Rico. Also on the schedule are preliminary-round games against the U.S. Virgin Islands at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and host Chile at 8:15 p.m. Thursday. The top two teams from the tournament's two groups will advance to Friday's semifinals, and the winners will meet in the gold-medal game Saturday. All games will be live-streamed on FIBA's YouTube channel and archived for future viewing.Maryland coach Mark Turgeon will be on the sideline as a U.S. assistant, but Terps fans won't be tuning in to watch him sitting on a chair."I get goose bumps right now talking about it," Clark said of Huerter. "The image of him in his USA jersey kind of popped into my mind. I mean, are you kidding me? To be able to wear those three letters across your chest, I don't care if it's tiddlywinks or basketball, that's a big deal. When you look at the guys that went out, that were invited to the initial camp, and then you look at the guys that made the cut, it's the best of the best in that age group that our country has to offer."Huerter, who is young for being in the Class of 2016, will play alongside star recruits like DeMatha's Markelle Fultz, a Washington-bound guard who's projected as the No. 3 overall pick in NBADraft.net's 2017 mock draft, and rising seniors Mohamed Bamba and Michael Porter Jr., forwards who are Nos. 2 and 3 in the site's 2018 mock draft. One NBA scout on hand for the U.S. team's recent workouts in Houston told SNY.tv's Adam Zagoria that four players had impressed him. Fultz, Bamba and Porter were three. Huerter was the fourth. "He's a long-range shooter," the scout said. "Huerter is easily the best shooter on the team."Clark said in the radio interview that Huerter has grown "almost 3 inches" since the Terps started recruiting him and has packed on about 15 pounds since January — on the FIBA rosters, he's listed at 6 feet 6, 198 pounds. Huerter already could do so much, Clark said. Now that versatility, like Huerter himself, has only grown."I don't know what his role's going to be," Clark said, "but I do know that we expect him to play a big role in the success that we should have."Just don't expect him to lead any international trips to Spanish-speaking countries anytime soon. No es una buena idea.Definitely should have paid more attention to Spanish class in middle school, we struggling out here— Kevin Huerter (@KevinHuerter) July 17, 2016
