Four-star quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr., a Maryland commitment and the centerpiece of the Terps' 2016 recruiting class, told 247Sports' Luke Stampini at The Opening that he might take an official visit to Florida.
Haskins committed to Maryland in mid-May, but the Gators have remained in contact. They're trying to get him to campus for Friday Night Lights, but Haskins isn't sure whether he'll make it to Gainesville for the one-night camp July 24.
"I'm going to try to visit. I would like to, but I don't know what my schedule has," he said. "I know I have practices, and two-a-days start, too. I think that might be time I have to go to team camp also, but if I'm free, I'm definitely going to try to get out there."
In any case, he definitely plans to visit Florida this fall for an official visit. Head coach Jim McElwain and offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier have been in his ear about the chance to play in Gainesville.
"Just that it's a great opportunity at Florida," Haskins said of their pitch. "They only have two or three scholarship quarterbacks; they want me to get back down."
Should Maryland be worried about Florida potentially flipping the 6-foot-3, 198-pound gunslinger?
Haskins reiterated that he's just doing his due diligence at this point.
"There's always a backup plan in life," he said. "I'm definitely committed to Maryland, 100 percent committed to Maryland. But just make sure if something happened there, I have another school to go to."
Haskins is rated as the No. 63 overall player in the nation by the 247Composite, an industry-generated recruiting ranking. He is rated as the nation's No. 5 pro-style quarterback and the No. 2 player in the state of Maryland.
