Joey Fisher has decided where he wants to go to college. The 6-foot-5, 248-pound junior defensive end from Washington County's Clear Spring High picked the Terps on Wednesday night.
"Maryland came up this past Monday," he said. "Edsall said [to] call Chad [Wilt] on Tuesday to talk, so we'll go from there. When I went up to Maryland last time, I talked to Coach Stud [Greg Studrawa]; he was joking that he can't wait to see me on the offensive line, and Wilt and him were arguing back and forth. But Maryland is looking at me strictly for defensive end, so that's where I'll play."
Fisher was under the radar until recently, when he impressed Wilt in workouts.
"You know, with me missing my junior year, I knew I'd be slow on offers, and I have these other colleges contacting me, but Maryland contacted me more," he said. "Maryland built a relationship through February, talked to me everyday on Twitter, brought me in on one-on-one camps, saw me work out a lot, did full drills, saw me hit the bags. They were the first ones to offer, and I want to go to a place where I can make an impact, felt wanted, and it was the hometown school. It was a really big, easy decision for me."
After injuring his shoulder and sitting out his junior season, Fisher said he's 100 percent healthy now.
"Yeah, I'm healthy now. I'm lifting a lot of weight. If anything, I think I'm stronger now than I was before the surgery," Fisher said.
Fisher credited Wilt, Maryland's young, energetic defensive line coach, with making him feel comfortable enough to become the Terps' seventh oral commitment in the Class of 2016.
"Coach Wilt is a great guy," he said. "We have a strong bond and we're really into honesty. And throughout this whole process, he's been giving it to me straight, and I really appreciate that. When I was at Maryland, he worked with an energetic mood and taught his athletes like a professional. That really stood out to me; it made me respect him a lot."
Fisher chose Maryland over interest from Tennessee, Michigan State, Purdue, Towson, James Madison, Wake Forest, Delaware, Holy Cross, Boston College and William & Mary.
"All of those schools showed interest, talked to me a lot on Twitter, but Maryland showed they cared," he said. "They saw me a lot in person, talked to me about what to improve on, scouted me and really helped me out. If anything, Towson showed the most interest because they came to see me and I went for one of their junior days."
Now Fisher is shutting down his recruitment and getting ready for his college career.
"Right now, I'm focused on building muscle, training to get better and being in top shape for when I get to Maryland," he said. "I'm shutting down the rest of my schools. I don't want any other interference. I'll be going to camp in June to see and work with Coach Wilt again, but I'm all Maryland. I'm a Terp 100 percent."
