Florida State's media notes project a key battle Saturday between Maryland receiver Stefon Diggs and Seminoles senior cornerback Lamarcus Joyner.
That should be fun to watch. But I'm looking forward to seeing how Maryland's pressure – the Terps have been sack happy through four games – fares against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.
I wrote a story for tomorrow's paper on Winston, who I spoke with briefly today.
The striking thing about Winston is how calm and focused he has been to begin his career.
At 19, the redshirt freshman seems immediately locked in. He completed 25 of 27 passes against Pitt in his first game.
I think there are several reasons for this. One is that Winston plays with a youthful exuberance that seems to preclude anxiety. It's as if he's tossing the ball on campus.
"I just like playing – we could be in a Walmart parking lot. I just like to play," he said Wednesday.
Another reason — according to Maryland defensive coordinator Brian Stewart – is that Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher has history as an offensive coordinator. And Winston has plenty of talent around him.
Fisher monitors Winston's media access so that the player is not overwhelmed. He does the same thing on the football field in terms of what he asks Winston to do.
"He's going to make sure that he gives the kid something that he can handle," Stewart said.
So far, Winston could hardly be handling things better.
