The pay gap between the U.S. men’s national team and the women’s national team when it comes to the World Cup bonus is no longer, but it’s not US Soccer that closed it.
LUNA bar is giving all 23 of the players named to the USWNT World Cup roster $31,250, the difference between the men and women’s World Cup roster bonus, it was announced Tuesday.
LUNA partnered with the U.S. Women’s National Team Player’s Association (USWNTPA) to make its donation directly to each of the 23 players.
“When LUNA Bar approached us in January to support and recognize the USWNT players in this way, I was speechless,” USWNTPA Executive Director Becca Roux said in a statement. “Many brands raising awareness for equal pay use the USWNT’s fight as an example, but don’t go the extra step to offer a solution to the problem. LUNA Bar has a long history of supporting women’s equality and is truly walking the walk by maximizing the amount of money going directly to the players and intentionally closing one of their pay gaps.”
Last month, the USWNT players filed a federal gender discrimination lawsuit seeking equitable pay to their male counterparts.
The players alleged they have been subject to ongoing “institutionalized gender discrimination,” including unequal pay, despite having the same job responsibilities as players on the men’s national team. The 28 members of the current national team player pool joined in the class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation.
“We believe it is our duty to be the role models that we’ve set out to be and fight to what we know we legally deserve,” forward Christen Press told The Associated Press at the time. “And hopefully in that way it inspires women everywhere.”
The announcement by LUNA Bar was made on Equal Pay Day.
“It’s ironic that one of the most popular sports in the world is still experiencing pay inequalities between women and men,” said Clif Bar & Company Owner and Co-CEO Kit Crawford. “We are big fans of the U.S. Women’s National Team and were inspired to take action and make a difference that matters. LUNA Bar is honored to give these women, and women everywhere, our support. It’s what is right, but more importantly, it’s what they deserve.”
