Digest (Nov. 3): Howard CC to play Genesee in JuCo national men's soccer tournament

The Howard Community College men's soccer team will play Genesee Community College (N.Y) in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship quarterfinals on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Herkimer, New York. The Dragons come into the tournament with a 13-5-1 record, having won five straight and nine of their last 10 games. This is the third time the Dragons have made a national tournament appearance, qualifying in 2010 and 2011. The Dragons made the eight-team tournament by winning the NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament final 2-1 over Northern Virginia Community College last Sunday. The Dragons are led in scoring by freshman brothers Steve Amankwah (15 goals, two assists) and Francis Amankwah (nine goals, three assists). ... Stevenson freshman Tariq Lee, a home-schooled student from Baltimore, was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Rookie of the Year and earned second team all-conference honors. ... Hood's Kyle McQuillen and Kenton Onspaugh were named the All-Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth team. ... McDaniel's Randall Hilleary scored twice to lead a 5-0 win over Juniata. ... Maryland junior midfielder Eryk Williamson was named Midfielder of the Year and was joined by senior midfielder Jake Rozhansky on the All-Big Ten First Team. Sophomore defender Donovan Pines was tabbed as a second-team pick.

Women's college basketball: Senior Ty-Nita Baker scored a team-high 12 points as Maryland cruised to a 98-47 exhibition victory over Bowie State on Friday evening.


College field hockey: Johns Hopkins rallied for the second straight game and beat fifth-seeded Haverford, 2-1, in overtime in the Centennial Conference semifinals Friday. ... The second-seeded Maryland field hockey team (13-6) suffered a 3-2 loss to third-seeded Penn State (16-3) in the Big Ten tournament semifinals Friday afternoon at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field.
