Midfielder Christine Nairn (Archbishop Spalding) scored in both halves for her first two goals of the National Women's Soccer League season to give the visiting Washington Spirit (10-3-2) a 2-1 win Thursday night over the Houston Dash (3-8-3) and sole possession of first place.

The Spirit earned a penalty kick in the 30th minute when Cari Roccaro fouled Cheyna Williams as she was making a run down the left flank into the penalty box. Nairn, who had been on the sideline after injuring her shoulder getting tangled with defender Ellie Brush, returned to take the penalty kick. She floated the ball toward the left post, and although goalkeeper Bianca Henninger guessed correctly, she could not get a hand on it, and the Spirit scored its first goal.

In the 63rd minute, Nairn saw Henninger off her line as she was making a run toward the team's attacking third. She capitalized on the opportunity and sent an arcing ball in from about 35 yards out that the keeper couldn't reach.

Jockey Victor Carrasco, 23, is looking to continue his career ascent Friday when Laurel Park opens its summer meet.

Laurel Park: A foot injury suffered Aug. 7 at Laurel Park will keep jockey Victor Carrasco from riding until the end of the month, agent Tom Stift said Thursday. Carrasco, 24, who was leading the summer meet in wins at the time of his injury, was hurt when he was unseated by O Dionysus, an unraced 2-year-old colt, while leaving the paddock for a 51/2-furlong maiden race. Carrasco had a third set of X-rays taken Monday and remains in an orthopedic boot to protect his foot. He is scheduled for a follow-up appointment Aug.29, when Stift hopes his rider will be cleared to return. This weekend marks the close of the 24-day stand at Laurel. Racing shifts to Timonium for the Maryland State Fair meet next Friday to Sept. 5 and returns for Laurel's fall meet starting Sept. 9.
